Personally I wouldn't mess with the integrity of the spring. I've seen people do it to cars and have some problems. I would just wait, save the money and do it the right way

I've not seen that (on a bike, though I know people have done it to cars for eons).

Most people buy: shorter shocks and/or lowering blocks, or shorter struts.

is this a joke because it sure sounds like one.......

tell your buddy to put the grinder down and sell his bike before he kills himself or someone else.

I done it several years ago on a set of shocks and it does work but it is not safe because both shocks will not rebound the same and the ride will be harsher. I done it to lower a show bike back in the day but on the road it rode like crap. Tell your buddy to save up the money and buy a good set of shorter shocks he will not only be happier in the end ( no pun intended) but it would be a lot safer too.

The spring works in conjunction with the gas cylinder portion of the shock. There is no way to alter the shock absorber portion length. Lastly, wound springs seat better with a flat face, which would be missing from a cut spring.

The stock shocks suck bad on a Sportster and he wants to make it even worse???
Stick with the stock shocks until he can afford a good aftermarket.
