It seems to be random, but my 2003 883 has a hard time starting up sometimes.
for instance today, it started fine with the enricher all the way out, even though i had to hold down the start button for a good few seconds (shouldnt it start right away?) and rode with the enricher out for 2 miles like the manual suggests. I got to my friends house a few miles away, shut it down, and then tried to start it back up about 5 min later. it took a good 5 presses and depressed of the start button to get it going, and that was with using the throttle a a little bit, and having the enricher all the way out.
i feel like this shouldnt be happening, any advice?
once the bike is warm you shouldn't need the enrichener, only for initial cold start. Crack the throttle 1/4 turn while cranking and you should be fine. If the bike has been sitting for some time, the fuel may have evaporated out of the bowl and needs to re-fill before it will start. The diaphragm is vacuum operated, so the only way it will open is if there is engine is turning, in this case by the starter.
PS- check your plugs, excessive use of the enrichener WILL foul them making starting and performance/mpg take a hit
^ see thats the thing, when i was at my buddys house even though it was only maybe 4 miles from my house, it should have warmed up by then. I was holding back the throttle and even had the enricher out, yet no easy startup.
I will check the plugs when I get a chance, thanks!
If the Enricher is fully out for a cold start, then the throttle should be closed(per the manual) when you hit the start button.
When Cold, my 2000 was taking usually 5-6 short pops of the starter to get it to start and run with the Enricher fully out and the throttle closed.. After it was warm it re-started fine with the enricher closed and a slight bit of throttle used right when hitting start.
Lately I have found a better way to get it to start on the first or second try when "Cold".
With the Enricher closed, before doing anything I first give the throttle one good 3/4 twist to put some fuel in the carb. Then I pull the Enricher fully out and hit start. Often it fires right up and then I barely touch the throttle for 4-5 seconds to get it to smooth out, letting it idle for 2 minutes with the Enricher out, then push it in and slowly pull away.
