My Next Project Checklist: New Handlebars on 02 883C
Here we are. I've been thinking of doing that mod for a long while and I'm finally getting around it. Because it's not gonna be easy, I want to make sure that I get it right so please review my plan below and let me know what you think . My dilemma lies between two very different setups:
12" ape hangers + shorty risers
9.5" pullback risers + current drap bars
IDEA #1: 1) The bars: Lick's Super Narrow 12" ($89) or West Eagle 12" Narrow Apes ($139 - second picture):
2) Speedo Mount to Left of the Tank: Autometer ($15):
3) Bottom Clamps that fit Custom Top Clamp to keep the dummy lights - Drag Specialties, 1.7" ($30):
4) Burly Brand 12" Cable Kit ($200):
Should look like that:
IDEA #2:
9.5" risers with pullback from Wild 1 Chubby's ($200) (or Debrix version for $47!):
I would use longer cables too (I suppose). The result would look like that:
Please let me know what you think of either setup. Is there one that is more complicated than the other? So far on my bike I've swapped the exhaust, replaced rocker box gaskets, and other minor works.
My understanding is you gain more handling control from the second set up. Which is what I went with on my bike. I didn't need to lengthen any cables, however the ones going into the speedo were pretty tight until I did a tank lift and wire tuck. If you're doing a side mount for your speedo you shouldn't run into that issue.
Just a note if you go with the apes. Just because you go with 12" apes doesnt mean you need +12" cables/lines/etc. I learned the hard way on my Nash 12" apes I bought the Burley +12" kit. You can see in the pic that my lines are about 6" too long. Lesson learned.
I agree with everybody here. Ultra high risers look weird to me also and like YOURADHERE stated, try installing the bars with stock cables first. I installed 14'' bars and I kept stock throttle cables, barely extended wiring and almost could of used the stock clutch cable. I used the cable that came in the kit however, it's too long. I am sure a 12'' cable would of worked much better.
