I'm looking at doing the 883 to 1200 conversion once the cold weather sets in. I think I'm going to have my 883 cylinders bored rather than buy new cylinders. Does anyone have a recommendation for a reputable machine shop in the Washington, DC metro area?
If you have them bored & honed you also have to make sure the pistons you buy are the correct fit for that bore size. If you buy the kits everything is included...cylinders,pistons, ring sets, wristpins, circlips, head and cylinder base gaskets..all for about $430 + $16 shipping. A shop has to have the correct jig to bore the Sportster cylinders.
Thanks for the advice - I wasn't going to have them bored until I got the pistons. Don't the kit cylinders have to be final honed to fit the pistons?
No. The cheaper kits or if you buy your cylinders and pistons seperately then you have to have them final honed. The kit he is talking about is ready to go and gaskets are included. Helluva deal in my book.
Thanks, GothMetalGuitarist. That being the case, I'm back to buying the kit like Olesalt used. When are you starting your upgrade? I'd be interested in what you are doing with yours. Your scoot looks awesome - I really admire the work you've done. If you don't mind me asking - are the tins a custom job?
Doug_2000, Try to avoid using a machine shop to bore your cylinders unless they are using torque plates. These plates must be used any time you bore or hone cylinders. Inconsistent bore diameter, "barrell" or "tapers" can develop if not using. You must pay close attention to temperature while boring. Try to keep the temp as consistent as possible. Try to find a reputable Harley shop that can perform this for you. Follow manufactures spec on the finish hone. Forged pistons and cast pistons require different fit. Also remember to machine cylinder base chamfer to prevent piston ring damage during installation. Ask questions and be sure whoever is doing the work uses Torque Plates and Digital Dial Bore Guages for the best accuracy. A little extra homework in this area will reduce oil consumption and increase engine life.
