I am a New Iron 883 owner and have spent the last two weeks just checking out this forum!
I was cursed with the Chrome Derby cover and am getting ready to do a switch to the 09 black derby cover. Does anybody have any words of wisdom, tips, tricks, or lessons learned for me?
Forgive me if this is somewhere on here, but I could not find it after several searches on both here and Google.
Have a buddy help or use some wood blocks to put the bike upright so you don't leak primary fluid. You shouldn't need a new gasket I reused mine, although it's a little tricky to get back into the grooves. Other than that it's cake.
Thanks Blaven48, do you happen to know the exact hex or torx size the bolts are? Im embarresed even asking that question, but I dont want to get the wrong size and strip it. Been there before!
T27 Torx!!! A 25 will fit, but 27 is the right size. I found that out the hard way. Just have someone stand the bike up straight, or put the side stand on some blocks. If the gasket looks bad, then change it, if not, leave it. Tighten the bolts in a star pattern. Also, don't over torque the bolts. Stripped two holes doing that. I think the torque value is around 130 inch-lbs. Not foot-pounds.
yep it's torx 27. 130 in/lbs is a little too much and you can scrub the torx screws (which are made out of chinese cheese) and that's no good
accoring to service manual it's 84-108in/lbs (9.5-12.2nm)
i torqued mine at 10 nm. and it's just fine.
