Default Project "Bandit"

Hey Guys,
For those who don't know I recently traded for a 2000' XL1200 Custom in somewhat rough shape. When I got it all I knew was an older lady was the 1st owner and she laid it down and busted the left engine case. Here is how she looked when the deal was made.

If Chrome got you home as the old saying goes then I'd be set. We attempted to turn the engine over "not intending to start it, just to make sure it wasn't locked up" and it turned over but the I heard a "pop" sound. Also it took all the gears with no problems, front end and swingarm all seemed true and straight. So with all of that it was time to start the teardown to get a better idea of how bad this winter project is going to be. So I loaded her on the trailer and took it down to the shop I work at...
Once at the shop I started by pulling the primary cover off to see what all fun times I was going to have, Here is a photo of the outer cover and all it's Glory.

And Behind door #1, right off the bat I could see why the starter made a pop sound...

Also Im going to be needing a new clutch basket as mine is cracked.

LOL not sure if you'll believe this or not but when I went to remove the air filter cover I noticed it was bent, and I looked at the fins on the head to make sure none were broke, this little chrome cover hit so hard it looks like someone has took a dremel to the fins...

After that I pulled the cam cover off to double check everything on that side which looks great.

Then I started removing the oil lines, wires, belt, & rear wheel. When I pulled the wheel off I looked at the belt which was fine, then I looked at the pulley and here is what I saw...

So she was almost stripped, and here are some smoke break shots, not in much order of course.

And last but not least I pulled the Heart from her....Broken Heart but oh well.

Right now as I type this post Im also bidding on a set of Buell cases on ebay for her, it currently has 2 hours time left on it, & Im going back and forth with this one **** who probably wants it for his streetfighter. lol but we'll see, If I get the cases I'll be sure to post, if not I'll let you guys know about some of my other plans I've got in mind. Hope the pictures aren't too big guys. Best Wishes -Joe.

Thanks Gpsjr,
believe me I thought the same there for a minute, but all it looks to be is a left case, & clutch basket. But if all pans out when she goes back together a set of cams will find their way in there also but your right on the having fun part no doubt, I've built my own metric bike from ground up, I have always wanted to do a sporty, the ironhead I had was just a "get running job" but this will be an actual winter project. Im even selling my monte carlo to pay for some perf. goodies. 15 minutes left on the auction, I'll let you guys know.

Winning ebay auctions is tough unless you time it just right. Personally, I never bid until 8 seconds left. Then put in the absolute highest ammount that I am willing to pay for it. If I get it, I get it. If I don't, I don't

I'll keep my eyes open for ya. If I hapen to find something, I will let you know.
