My solution
I tried the V & H quiet baffles - maybe a coulple db quieter but not enough. Tried the SMARTPARTZ Hard Kore Quiet baffles in the standard V & H baffles- for me personally I didn't much care for the sound quality but they were definitely quieter at idle than the V & H quiets. Much different story while riding - very loud and a wierd harshness about it.
Tried wrapping the V & H standard baffles with the fiberglass off the V & H quiet baffles and running those with the SPquiets again - softened the note a little bit at idle but again awful while riding.
Finally I orderd more fiberglass packing from V & H ($1.98/sheet) and re-wrapped my V & H quiets as tightly as possible (1 sheet per baffle and watch the length of the sheets, they vary) and wrapped that with safety wire (tightly) then added some FMF 1/4" 4 stroke muffler packing (available at any import dealer) around the front end of the quiet baffle (the end with the big holes), tucking it into the little cavity around the front flange and leaving only the front set of big holes exposed then safety wired that. - Finally! the result I was looking for. Much quieter at idle but still a good rumble and very sweet when on the throttle. It's a little harder to hear at 70 mph but the quality is definitely there. Seems to really sing at 80 mph, after that the wind noise kinda takes over. 100% nicer than stock and still unmistakably Harley.
So F.Y.I. for any of you who have been searching for a little less volume but still maintain the better sound quality out of your V & H's. Hope this works for somebody.
I really should have posted pics but damn I hate to pull those SOB's out again - Sorry.
P.S. I did try just once to get one full wrap of the 1/4" packing around the V & H quiet baffles but that **** is just too thick & won't go in the muffler - if any body was wondering.
