i wouldn't buy a 98 sportster, they have the Solid Mounted motors, I would sale your 72 that barely runs (itmay be hard but sale it before it has a major breakdown) and get a 2004 or newer Sportster of your choice or a bigger metric bike that runs good. Sportsters are not that much money and there are tons of cheap but nice metric crusiers out there. If you are getting a metric crusier I would suggest something 1000cc or bigger.

Don't worry about any a$$hole community ride what you want a 72 would be cool to own though but if it isn't reliable you don't wanna get stuck somewhere and you get 2 bikes for one so I don't know hard decision

Not sure why a new/rebuilt motor with only 3K on it would be acting up.....Other than the builder not knowing what they were doing or that you were misusing the choke & fouled the plugs or F'd up the carb some how. Nothing wrong with a '98 Sporty, but I'd keep the shovel & get the carb/choke figured out.

I threw some new spark plugs in her and she fired right up and ran great. I definitely want to keep the glide. The front cylinder was the one with the fouled plug. I thought it smelled like oil but wanted to believe it was carbon. Also the guy at napa when I bought new plugs thought the same; smelled like oil but looked like carbon. Hoping not the oil issue.

What classifies as 'misusing' the choke? I have to pull the choke way up to start it, but usually after a few minutes I am able to push her back down and get a nice low idle. I just want to see how long it is before I foul another plug and go from there since this was the first time they fouled on me, but I;ve only put 1000 miles or so on her...
Thanks

Keep the glide, work on the carb. Find the fouling issue, if it has one. 40 year old bike cool to own, and ride.

Keep the glide. sporty's are like leaves, In the fall there is a million of them. If you want a sportster look on craigs list in the fall, they go pretty cheap. If you let go of your glide You may never get a similar bike again. I know you said you allready have a rocket, so you don't need that other Kawayamazuki, or what ever it was. Ride your rocket to work and fix the old girl. I think, in the long run you will be glad you did.

One way of "misusing" the choke is pulling the choke all the way out and leaving it all the way out for a few minutes each time you start the bike. You should only need the choke all the way out for about 15 to 30 second at most and then push the choke back in in small increments, such pushing it back in 1/4 way after about 20 seconds. Or you can adjust the tension screw/know on the choke so that the choke slides back in on it's own as the motor warms up, like minie. Otherwise, leaving the choke out to long will foul the plugs.
