As part of my current project, I removed the carburetor yesterday from my 1996 / 883 for a rebuild. FYI - Stock HD exhaust with baffles punched out. I will be running a fully exposed K&N filter.
Expecting the original jets, I discovered a 45 slow and a 175 main. My initial plan was to keep the stock jets and simply adjust the mixture. All stores closed due to the holiday, I finished the rebuild using what was there and reinstalled the carb. Bike started right up and appears to run fine, but it was too late to tinker with. Tonight I plan to confirm the idle setting and adjust the mixture. Also will replace the spark plugs and monitor to see if Im running too rich.
Not concerned with the 45 slow jet, but a 175 main just seems too large. I know there are many posts regarding this topic, but Im curious what set-up others are currently running. Your thoughts please thanks.
My 883 had a 42 pilot and a 175 main. It had an SE A/C and slip-on exhausts. I changed the 42 pilot for a 45 and had it about 1.5 to 1.75 turns out on the mixture screw. Ran great and got good MPG. If it matters, I live in GA at about 1000ft elevation.

I was debating about re-jetting also to my 05 sportster 883c...So I did not re-jet. I am currently running screamin eagle slip onz , and sometimes switch back to the much quieter pipes. I did NOT upgrade to a higher volume air filter either.. I simply drilled the metal plug out of the carb and richened it up in steps.. I found out that when I screwed the screw all the way in to begin with, it was only backed out 3/4 of a turn from the factory..So, I tryed several different settings and all worked fine, but, it usually ends up being about 1-1/2 to 2 turns out AFTER seating the screw all the way in >>> (GENTLY SEATED).. I am NOT a mechanic by trade, but I am NOT scared to work on this bike at all.... IT WORKS FOR ME... RIDE ON!!
