I need to loosen the exhaust pipes on my 03 sportster. I have put pb blaster on the studs and nuts. Any suggestions on the best way to remove the nuts ? I don't want to break off the studs. Is there a problem just using a ratchet and socket? Thanks in advance ..joe
Socket and ratchet, I bet they screw right off.
I have never had a problem, they are usually a bit loose anyway. But there is always a first time.
Heat shields can get in the way sometimes.
very easy to come off except for the front head left one, you will probably need a wrench for that one or a wobble socket adaptor, remember putting them back on, a torque wrench is best to use believe tighten to 110 inch pounds, DON'T over tighten or you can snap the stud, and that's a whole other problem.....really simple, you replacing the exhaust or something? if you are replace the exhaust gaskets, good luck!
I have known a whole lot of exhaust studs breaking off and am too old to ask for a big problem ! I got this piece of chrome that fits at the bottom of the push rod tubes that is too big to add without moving the pipes. Hope i aint asking for misery thanks so much joe

I'd recommend using a "6 sided" socket, maybe a deep one so you are sure to have positive contact with the nut. That's what I used and had no trouble at all. Of course, that was several years ago.
Last night my son and I got out the ratchets , sockets and wrenches and all went well with just a little screech as the nuts broke loose. Then we installed the chrome cover over the base of the push rod tubes that I had purchased and it looks great. I have to admit if I had known you needed to loosen the pipes, and associated nuts and pieces , I'd never have entertained this piece of chrome. I have one of the most chromed out Sportys anywhere ! Thanks to all for the support ! Joe
