Default starting problem

I have an '07 Nightster with an intermittent problem. When I press the start button, occasionally all I get is the click of the relay. The relay continues to click but its as if its not sending voltage to the solenoid. When it first began acting up after a few tries the starter would do its job, but has been getting worse. I thought initially relay but no corrosion on the plug tangs. Heading to Daytona in a few weeks and don't need to be stranded. Any input on where to begin would be greatly appreciated.

The first thing I would check would be the battery cable connections, both ends, both cables. Crack them open and make sure they are clean and tight. After that I would check the battery - 12.9 volts sitting, not dropping below 12.2 on start and 14.2 at high idle. A low drop on start would indicate a bad battery. After that you would be looking at the starter system.

I appreciate your input, But I don't think it is the battery because it is intermittet, but getting worse.

If battery cable connections are lose or corroded it would likely be intermittent and get worse over time.

+1 on this. Happened to my battery a few weeks ago.

07 Sporties are also notorious for water intrusion problems in the fuse block area. Remove all the fuses and relays, clean their contacts and then coat the contacts and socket connections with dielectric grease and reinstall. You can get the dielectric grease at any auto parts store.
