yeah, sorry about that. SAE = Society of Automotive Engineers. Here's a link on how to use taps and dies. Not only do they clean threads, they also make new threads and allow you to make your own parts.

ah thankyou so much for the link.

so are you saying that its possible to convert an SAE thread to a metric size thread?
or will it just make a sae bolt thead into a smaller sae thread

yeah, you can convert them, you usually have to start by drill the existing threads out though and bumping up to a bigger size. Making bolts smaller is a pain without a lathe, it's just easier to tap threads and then use the correct bolt.

you might try and take a nut and cut a slit through one side with a dremel and a cut off blade so it looks like a "c" but with the 2 ends almost touching (try and find a nut with a shoulder on it)...and try and thread that onto the stud with a deep socket holding it as straight as you can..that may clean up the threads enough to get a couple of good nuts on the stud, which you can tighten together so they lock....then you can just turn the stud out with the nut

thanks for all the help guys, but iv give up and handed it over to a friend who is a lot better at stuff like this, he should get around to looking at it tomorrow
