I know shocks and lowering have been discussed before but the advice seems to depend on a lot of things so here we are again. I have an '06 1200C that I ride to work fairly regularly (70 miles round trip). I ride two up a few times a month. The stock shocks are set on the 3rd preload setting which isthe middle of the adjustment and I only occassionally bottom out on the bigger dips at higher speeds. I weigh 180 lbs (wife 135).
I can't decide if I want to lower the bike or not. If I lower it I would go with 11" HD 412's and the fork lowering kit from Progressive (1" drop). My concern is losing ground clearance and bottoming out more. I don't mind a stiff ride so I figurethe heavy duty shock will give me enough adjustment to prevent bottoming out will riding solo. I guess the only concern is ground clearance in the turns and bottoming out when riding2 up. Will my ground clearance change that much when making this change and do I have enough adjustment on the HD version of the 412 to prevent bottoming out when riding 2 up?
Do you bottom out riding solo or 2-up? Have you tried maxing out the shocks, going to step 5? My weight and my fiance's weight are very similar to what you posted and I have never bottomed out with the shock on the 5th step.
I do bumpup the preload to the 4th position when riding 2 up but I bottom out occasionally solo and 2 up with those settings. I guess what I'm looking for is an opinion on whether changing my suspension like I mentioned above would increase bottoming out or if I would have enough adjustment to prevent it. The reason I want to change out the stock shocks is because it feels as though I can't get the right preload. Either its too much bounce and the occasional bottoming out or its nearly rock hard. I'm hoping the Progressives will be a much better set up.
I don't believe the HD version of the 412's will lower your bike it says it in the book will not lower custom model.I would look into that if I were you.I have the 412's on my 06 and it def lowered the bike but they have 5 positions.
By "HD", I ment the heavy duty version of the 412. Did you get the standard or the heavy duty version of the 412? Is your sig picture before or after you put the new shocks on?
