so i just bought a 96 sportster 883 with a peanut tank and i was wondering how many miles you guys get out of the tank? right now before i switch to reserve it does 55 miles then i have to put it down to reserve.....also i have read that theres a break in period. my 96 was just sitting around not ridden so it only had 990miles when i got it, now it has about 1170 miles. will i get better mpg after i log miles on it, is somthing wrong with my bike? or is this the risk im have when having a cool looking peanut tank. thanks guys
I have a 01, with the nut tank. I look for a gas station about once every 100mi. Took it up to 120ish without hitting reserve. I weigh about 135 and keep my RPM around 2.5-3k sometimes ******* it. You mileage will improve after your 3k and 5k marks but I'd say your still looking low.
My 87 1200 conversion with tank lift gets about 60 miles before I hit reserve. Its a pain in the *** but what are you gona do the peanuts just look cool.

Carb. It's hard to make a solid estimate because everyone rides different and weight. I like the sound of a low RPM chug so I shift low and that probably helps a lot. I just have the normal stock nut tank that came with it in 01. 100-120 BEFORE reserve on 85 octane
Ok I'm 150lbs and ride hwy alot but also cruise the pads but the tollways here in TX are 70mphs so I gotta stay up around 3k-3.5k rpms around those speeds didn't know if that was a cause of not as good mpg
I just filled mine up, 61 miles in 1.3 gallons, works out to 47 mpg.
Just put some Seafoam in for the very first time (13K on her), and she seems to run way smoother. I'd buy a can ($9.00 at Walmart), put in a couple ounces and see if that helps.
I think I've gotten close to 50 mpg, but I've been fiddling with my carb mix lately, so I've been on and off the throttle when I've been out.
