Can starters be rebuilt? Mine does not work and i would like to avoid paying $379.00 for a new one. Any suggestions? It's just makes a metal on metal loud knock when I hit the start button. Battery is brand new from Harley, got it yesterday, the main breaker is brand new as well.... Help!!!
Sounds to me like the starter clutch. That is a fairly common problem, and yes, it can be replaced without replacing the entire starter. That is one problem I haven't had yet, so I can't help with what all is involved. It be a major job, just based on what all is involved to get to the starter.
yes,.. but first I would clean/sand the contact disc
take out the starter and open the solenoid part of it (its the smaller tube that runs along the side of the big tube) inside you will find a round metal contact disc that makes contact when the solenoid pulls in and sends the current to the windings of the starter and causes it to spin ....what it sounds like to me what is happening in your case is that the starter solenoid is pulling in (that is the metal clunk you hear) but the contact disc is not making and sending the current to the starter winding and making the starter turn...
Ok, so last ditch effor, I pulled out my battery, disconnected the the battery cables from the grounds/ started. I then cleaned them and sanded them down so there was a really good connection. BAM!!!!!! Turned right over!!!! no more click!!!!
Starting, now thats another story, Im still excited to hear it turn over after 3 years of sitting in the previous owners garage!!!!
Time to figure out whats clogged in the carb, its not getting fuel. I cant wait to hear this bad boy fire up.
Im so happy right now!
Thanks for all your help, Now I need to figure out what to do with this starter I just bought on craigslist, I only had to drive an hour to go get it!!
hang on to the starter until after you put a couple thousand miles on it !
