Default Thinking about painting...

I rattled canned my tank last week and did a pretty ****-poor job of it. Bad prep, bad work environment, etc. A gas spill pretty much destroyed it, too.

I plan on doing it again now that I know what steps to take to prep.

But while I'm at it, I'm considering painting some other parts.

On the list:

Tank
Front/Rear Turn Signal Housings
Handlebars
Engine
Primary/Cam
Oil/Battery Covers
Possibly painting the sprocket red. Mine's all rusty right now...

I'm thinking of going flat-black for everything, and maybe red for the rocker covers. I'm colorblind so I'm not sure if that would look stupid, but it my mind it sounds good.

Suggestions?

The rockers will probably give you the biggest problem, make sure to use high heat paint. flat black for everything else will look good. You painting the whole motor?

Everything except the pushrods.

I used VHT for my tank, the stuff is good for 1200*. But I had some problems with that paint I think maybe something lower would be sufficient next time.

If you want to rattle can and don't care, you'll get nowhere. If you want to rattle can and care, and put an effort in, you can get somewhere, for a while. Non chemically catalyzed paint will never last long, it sucks, period. But there are now some 2-part (chemically catalyzed) paints out there, and they sound good.

But in your case powder coating would be the best bet, I think.

If all you want is flat black then you have two options, or three really:

rattle can and gross

pro painter and expensive

powdercoat andd somewhere in between, money-wise

BTW VHT is awesome, I rattlecanned my titanium wrap and it got ugly at first, but has been white (per the can) since then. Just smells funny lol...

Random 32 inch drags I found on eBay. I'll try to hunt down some more details for you later.

If you put a light coat of clear over it after using a decent paint you shouldn't run into any problems. Although it may add some shine to it. So maybe a flat primer as an alternative? I'm no painter, just some dude.

My buddy just plasti dipped his whole bike. Heads and all. It holds up to the heat. Give it a try that way if you aren't happy you just peal it off. Personally I think your bike has great contrast to it right now.
