I just bought this 05 sportster and I dont know what the part below the spark plug is. On one cylinder it has a black cap and on the other it is broken. Can anyone tell me what the part is and if it matters?
Is it a button? It's hard to tell since I'm on my phone but if it's got head work cams and high compression pistons it could be a pressure relief valve
compression release. They are used for starting. Push them down before starting if the motor has high compression the starter will thank you. Since you dont know what they are I take it you dont use them? How does the bike start without them? Any hot start issues?

I just bought the bike and am still assembling it and was told it does have motor work done. Cant start the bike yet. The picture i posted still has the black button which you can push down or pull up. The other cylinder the black part is broken. Who would I talk to with to try and order a new one?
I see. You can get them from a dealer but they are not cheap. Some of them have replacable caps maybe you can just replace the cap. They are made with differant size threaded ends so I remove it check the threads and try jirehcycles.com thats where I got mine cheap.BTW the broken cap will not keep it from working just wear gloves they get very hot.
