Default now what??carb work??

well i went into my stock cv carb,,on my 2003 1200cc
yesterday,,they told me at the HD shop to help the bike
for a every-now and then carb cough,,to take out the low jet,
it was a 42 jet,,what ever that means..LOL they sold me
a 48 jet,,i put it in..the told me to leave the main-jet like it is..
i removed the adjusting plug,,drilled and removed, turn the
adjustment in untill snug,,then backed it out around 21/4 turns
seems to run better,,still has a cough,,helped it,,but did not cure
the problem.Question??should i raise up the number and put
a different main jet??if so,,which one???come on gang help me here
im looking for some power,,also i know the 1200cc its there

Put one needle shim in ($0.35 from HD) and try again. This srves to raise the needle thus richining the mixture.

I would be cautious with the larger low jet at #48. I tried one in my quest to find the answer to the same problem that you and countless others have had. Was way too rich and had a lot of backfire from the exhaust, occasionally flooding out, and carboned up plugs.Ended up with a 46/45 low jet. My present set up is 45 low, 180 high with one washer at 023. under the needle jet. I also drilled out the slide vacuum hole to l/8 OD. It covered all the ranges of speed andhas finally solved my carb coughs. Mileage is not quite the same but, performance and response are better than I could have ever expected. I also did some work to the stock AC allowing more air flow into it. Of course also put on a betterfree flowexhaust with cycle shack slip ons. Each area of the country is different and requires a little different set up. This has finally worked for me. Took me awhile to dial it all in but, I did it all myself at minimal cost.

I agree, I wouldn't go any larger on the slow jet. When I read your post, I thought going to a 48 from a 42 might be a bit much. But, my experience is with an 883. I went from a 40 to a 45 on the slow jet and after just a little tweeking on the idle air mixture adjustment. I eliminated the carb farts.

I also added the screamin eagle air cleaner at the same time. And eventhough, it's probably not really necessary, I bumped up the fast jet to a 180.

Thats my same set up a SE A/C and put in a 45 slow and a 180 main and 2 turns out on the A/F mixture screw. and running cycle shack slash cut slip ons runs great.

Nortorious, sounds like he hitit right, you can shim it or if it has a retaining ring on it ,just move it down one ,this will richin it up, the size 45 or 48 is .45 -.48 mm and the 180 -185 is 1.80 -1.85 mm, your main jet is for around 3/4 throttle to full,so if it not doing it in 4-5th gear i wouldnt change the main, depending were you live when it gets alittle warmer your bike will run a little richer. good luck
