I change the tires on all my Harley's at around the 10,000 mile mark, even though there is a fair amount of tread left on them.

I do very little "city" or "bar to bar" riding, and living out in the boondocks where I am most of my rides consist 65+ MPH runs of considerable distance.

Sure, I could probably milk 15,000 miles out of the front tire and still have a little tread showing, but I don't want to do that, by choice.

Since I only have 2 tires between me and the pavement, I like to keep pretty fresh rubber on the bikes.

Tires aren't that expensive, and changing them out a couple times each year isn't going to break the bank.

yep what fender guy says skimping on tires is a real easy way to get in trouble. new tires are cheap insurance and dont forget to check the brakes while the tires are off. let me rephrase that check your brake pads and rotors for wear.. do not squeeze the brake lever or it will get ugly.

I believe 11k miles is about average for front tires. I have a 99 1200C with a little over 11K miles, the rear tire is getting pretty smooth and I could still get several miles out of the front tire but it is showing signs of dry cracking and Im a firm believer in changing both tires at the same time.
Good Rule of Thumb: Take a penny and turn Lincolns head upside down. Insert the penny into the tread. If the tread covers the top of Lincolns head then you have plenty of tread. If you can see the top of Lincolns head then you should replace the tires.
