Default 1250 conversion on my 2005 883L tech question

`RANT ALERT- I work overseas. I dropped my bike off about 4 months ago at my mechanic who is very competent and a long time friend to do the conversion for me and do some more custom work while I was gone. Well, **** happens and for some reason he has not been able to work on my bike until now, which is about a week before I come home. I’m kind of pissed because now anything can go wrong and I won’t have a bike ready to come home too. He is cutting it very close since he just NOW dropped everything off at the powder coater! Anyway I believe I have ordered all the parts needed and he says he has everything and that the bike will be ready this weekend. I will have to do the break in period myself. Which is a oil change at 500 miles correct? I have read that you have to re-jet the carb when you do this. He says there is no need since I ordered an ignition module. Can anybody confirm this for me?

Thanks..

Follow your service manual, they have descriptions of what needs to be done at each stage of mileage. Change oil (both), check primary chain, adjust clutch, re-check torque on rocker cover bolts. Pretty much give the engine a good inspection and adjustment.

Check your spark plug for correct jetting.

Pretty simple I would think.

Sorry about having a leisurely 4 month "rush job" waiting for you.

I think you need to find out from NRHS or Hammer Performance how to properly break in the new cylinders, heat cycles, suggested jetting, etc.

OK thanks for the information guys. I will follow the service manual recommendations and schedule a dyne tune while I am home on break and look for a better mechanic. I just have a feeling my bike isn’t going to be ready and me and my bud might have some words!

I just finished my conversion, along with some other mods and I had to re-jet the carb (2005 XL883C). The size of the jets will depend on where you live (elevation) and exhaust configuration. I'm running V&H Short Shots, Twin-Tec ICM, AN Big Sucker breather, and HD CV carb. I went with the 180 main jet, but my local mechanic suggested a larger (.48) pilot jet. And I finally got her to live and breathe again last night. Now it's just a matter of dialing in the A/F mix and running through the heat cycles.

BTW - you might want to start checking on those jets now... My local HD dealer doesn't carry most of them - they're special order! WTF! How can stock parts be special order??? Anyway, after a week of waiting and three shops later, I have my jets and we're in the home stretch. I found a good website that will help with tuning your carb too... http://www.harley-performance.com/index.html

Good luck!

Is Hammer and NRHS the same company?
