I had buckhorns on my bike when i got it,changed to factory dyna bars, then i had a chance to buy 10" mini apes they are so nice ,they keep your hands above your heart
so it seems you get more blood to your hands=hands do not go numb as fast.

Are you a new rider? You could be overly tense, all worked up. Too tight a grip and stiff at the neck and shoulders.

Well sort-of. I rode constanly form 1963 till 1980, then none at all, till 2 weeks ago, when I bought the Sporty.

OP consider yourself a new rider. I also got back into motorcycles this year after stopping in 86. I had numb hands on the interstate and on smaller roads after about 20 minutes, and burning in my shoulders and until I felt more comfortable again being back on a bike this kept happening. Definitely relax. You could also try bringing the bars a bit closer to you which I also did so that I was not leaning so far forward against them with my arms so stretched out. Rode a full 8 hour day 2 weeks ago with no problems except my tailbone about 10 minutes from home.

I had the same issue when I bought my Iron, my hand would go numb in stop and go traffic, and occasionally on long stretch's. I ended up ditching the mechanics gloves I had been wearing for some HD gloves that have gel in the palms. Major improvement in my hands and shoulders. Now it feels weird not wearing them for quick runs around the block. They were stickered at $50, but I got them for $22 on sale at the local dealer.

Pound a roll of lead in to each side of the handlebar. I read about it on another forum, and gave it a try since I hand plenty of lead laying around. I think it worked pretty good. Better than what the Avon grips did for me I think.
