The sand paper and aluminium trick must work by increasing the diameter of the bar. That should allow the clamp to provide a tighter squeeze overall.
The rubber does essentially the same thing but also would provide a common surface for the bars and clamp to grip that would be less prone to slip than the other two.

This works a 100% of the time. Make good deep dents when doing this, it raises the metal around the dent. I did this on my last 2 sets of apes and no more moving. Don't wrap crap around the bars or try and shove something in between it won't work and will fail at the most inopportune moment.
