Default Trailer Fender

Ok so i am going the "trailer fender" route for my 07 xl1200L. now i have seen the Threads from years ago on here and got some great ideas. I understand having the fender supports bolted to the swing arm. but what about the forward lower part. are you guys drilling into the swing arm and bolting it to that or what? trying to keep it supported to when the ole lady wants to go for a little ride she can still jump on. thanks

It's pretty much up to you how you want it mounted. If you're looking to get the lowest profile possible while using shocks, mounting it to the swingarm is a pretty good way to go about it.

thats what im going for the low profile. just would rather not take the rear tire off to do it. cutting the fender struts off next weekend hopefully then ill be fitting my fender. really would like to put the rigid struts on instead of running shocks.. but i dont think she would go for it.

A swingarm mounted fender might not be much better for your girl than struts because instead of the tire going up and down with the bumps now the fender goes too. Also with the weight of a passenger, that set-up can start to fail, cracked fenders and so on. It's a tough call when you want that slammed look and also want to ride two-up. I think from my experience the best comprimise is solid struts with a king and queen seat and a swingarm mounted sister bar.

ok so here is my slow progress.. got one of the struts cut off, not sure if i should go right up to the bolt hole or leave it where it lies. ill cut the other maybe tomorrow. then should be fitting my fender up. decided to try out the solid struts.

I stopped right about there and saw no sense in going further. I’m not a structural engineer, but no need in pushing the limit. Not a spot that you want the frame to fail.

Yeah I wouldn't want to go much further. There's a lot of stress at that mount.

I have a swingarm mounted fender and would never put a passenger on it. Like someone else said, the fender will move with the wheel then and I cant imagine someone riding on it. Just my 2 cents...
