I use QD sideplates. I did the measurements. The end-to-end width from the bottom where they insert into the sideplates is 8 7/8". It's 1/2" square tubing and the mounting holes are 1 1/2" eye-to-eye.

The QD's are spaced wider than the fixed mounts. Outside width on a fixed sissybar is 7 1/2" - QD is 8 7/8" like you said. Both use 1/2" square bars. The fixed I have has clean holes through the plate and bar - requires bolts & nuts to mount. QD has hole on inside of the plate tube and the bar has threaded holes - no nuts needed (but mine are always hanging with me).
Running the fixed right now but got a QD setup that I'm cleaning up that'll be going on soon.
