I have a 94 sportster 883 with 900 original miles on it. Just replaced the petcock and had the carb serviced 3 months ago. Problem is I run out of gas in about 45 miles (2.2 gal tank) and can only go about 4 miles when switched to reserve. There is a strong smell of gas in the garage after riding and no visible leaks. Any thoughts as to the cause???

Honestly, that sure doesn't sound right, especially if you do the math; a 2.2 gallon tank gets you only 45 miles? Vapor smell in the garage with no visible sign of a leak?
Maybe your kid brother is stealing your gas for his crotch rocket?
Do you turn "off" the petcock when parked? I left mine "on" once and the tilt on the bike allowed gas to get past the float needle, with a full tank I would imagine there would be more fuel to exert pressure on float needle, JMO.
Is your accelerator pump diaphragm torn? You might be leaking fuel while riding and not even be aware.
Is your float level set correctly? Could be dumping out the overflow hose.
@ Mathos883 Don't count on the light. Mine comes on at about 90 miles. But people here say it varies alot. I go by mileage only. I try not to go past 120 but have pushed it to 140. I should get close to 150.
