Speakers, on a Sporty? Hmmmmm...I suppose anything's possible [heehee]. I kinda' like cHarley's idea of a "Bluetooth helmet mounted speakers/headset paired to your smartphone" but as for myself I'm not keen on the idea of drowning out noise that I may need to hear involving things going on around me, just for the sake of listening to music.
Anyway, to me [and this is gonna' sound so passé, LOL], the sound of the exhaust and engine screaming is all the music I'll ever need to hear while I'm out on my Iron.
In any event, I hope you find a solution that won't break the bank and sounds good! Post up some pics and info when you git'r done!

It was actually surprising how well I can still hear surrounding sounds with the helmet system, assuming reasonable volume levels. Unlike using earbuds that block the ear canal, the speakers are mounted in the helmet, not in your ears.
And, if you've ever run fairing mounted speakers on a bike at highway speeds, you'll know how loud they have to be cranked up to even hear them, and then you've drowned out the surrounding traffic noise anyway.
If you're up for making mounting equipment and running wires, go to the local boating shop (West Marine is the biggest where I'm at). You can get marine speakers at decent prices there. They are built to handle water, heat, sun, and humidity.
iPod + buds, or buds for your Smart Phone are cheapest & "cleanest" option (IMO), but need to check state laws on if they're authorized for m/c riding.

I have a 04 sporty and wanted some kind of music while riding as well. Iwent with the Pyle 600W Amp with Speakers for the price ($110 on ebay) and truthfully,im happy with them. They do start to sound like crap if you get over 70ish, butfor in town riding and pleasure riding I can hear them just fine without drowningout traffic sounds and I always wear a FF helmet as well
I wired mine up so that I have to have the key on for the speakers to workthat way there wouldnt always be a pull from the battery. Seems to work finefor now. I also have a small magnetic tank pouch that I keep insurance card anda little extra cash in that my iPhone fits in perfectly so I can plug and playmusic anytime.
Ill post some pics if I can figure out how. Im new to this forum so theymight not turn out great
Really, don't screw up a Sportster with mounted speakers.
iPod + ear buds give you better sound, leave the bike look like a bike, and do not annoy-a-tron the ones around you, with what is mostly noise coming off those El Cheapo speakers with 10% distortion.
