Default Changing Wheels

I have a 2004 XL1200C with a 21" front wheel and I'm thinking about changing it for a 19" like the newer customs. Has anyone done this already? What's involved - new wheel (obviously), new tyre, new mudguard? Anything else?

Thanks

Jug

You don't need to change your wheel, just get a new 19" rim installed on your current hub. That will need a new rim and shorter spokes, plus tyre, rim tape and tube. It can be done at home, but a local indy should be able to do it for a decent labour charge.

One of the reasons I want to change the wheel is to put a cast wheel on as opposed to a spoked one. I like the idea that a puncture is easier to deal with on a tubeless tyre.

Is the speedometer/odometer correct or off with the new 19"?

@gilmour, did you have to do anything to your fender? EvO said that he had to redrill his.

Ah, now I understand! You may find you can make your current fender fit, by lengthening the mounting slots. The 21" and 19" wheels are closer in overall diameter than the rim sizes suggest. If you buy a wheel from a similar age bike it should bolt right in.
