Yep here's where I sound like a greenhorn. I just did the 1200 upgrade and there's a little oil pool on the tappet block and pushrod area. Does this mean that the lower gasket could be bad? Has anyone every had oil leak from the oil hose coming out of the oil tank? What did you do to fix it?
Thanx
The term tappet block confuses me. Did you replace all the gaskets during reassembly. From the top down:
Outer rocker cover
Inner rocker cover
Cylinder head
Cylinder
The four tubes going up from the crankcase are pushrod covers. Can you describe where your leak is again. Also, did you have a service manual when you did the conversion?
I'm basing my questions on t=my 04 conversion...your's may be different.
My bike is a 2000 XL. I had it done by an authorized factory shop. Not a stealer. They replaced all of the gaskets. I have all of the old parts in a box, gaskets included. It looks like the oil is coming from the bottom of the pushrod cover where it goes into the bottom part of the block or maybe the lower gasket where the head meets the bottom end. I also have a leak coming from the oil tank hose. It only leaks when pressure builds. I changed the hose clamps and it still leaks. Hope that helps.
If one of the pushrod covers is leaking, then the tank, inner and outer rocker covers and the head for that cylinder have to come off to fix it. If it's covered by warranty then have the shop make it right. Here's a pic of my 04 conversion. If you have to do the work yourself and you need procedures and images I can email them to you. Let me know olesalt43@suddenlink.net
IF you had a shop do the work, take it back to them to correct the problem. For the oil tank hose, make sure the end of the line doesn't have cracks where it goes onto the fitting, also check that the fitting itself is not scratched or cracked, and also look to see if it's leaking where the fitting is mounted into the engine case.
Thanks Olesalt. Thanks to everyone that's responded. I have to take it back for the break in oil change next week. The shop that I take it to has done me right everytime that they've had my bike in there. I tried to do the jet kit myself a while back. I kinda screwed up on it and they fixed for a stupid tax of 75 bucks. I'm pretty sure that they'll fix it up. I took it out to bike night last night and oddly enough I found that it's not so easy for V-Rods to walk away from me anymore. I'm sure that they could eventually, but I was right there with him up through third. I'm sure once it's broken in and and the little issues are fixed - the carb is loading up on me a bit, minor oil leaks, I'll have a nice little sleeper. I plan on leaving the 883 badges on. I'll post pics once it's done and the chrome is nice and shiny.

I'd pretty much count on it... once those horses start getting their legs stretched out it'll be over...
Not to take anything away from your bike... just the way it is...
And I'm sure you'll have the little sleeper you want in the end...
