Ok im new to this forum btw names keith. But i got a 79 xls as my first bike. Ive basically redone everything but the motor&tranny. Didnt know i was goin to get this far into it when i got it but now im almost done. I love it, and its been me and my granddads project. Back to the problem though. We have replaced everything in the clutch besides the steel plates (which i ordered) and the chain. The clutch isnt engaging we have adjusted it every way possible and replaced everything but what i said above. It could be the clutch cable it is longer than needed. Which if the steel plates dont help were goin to it next.
Is there anything were missing that could be the problem? My grandads thinking is everything else is new so it has to be the problem. Which makes sense. But i still wanna know if there is anything else it could be. Its a ironhead 79 roadster xls 1000 bored to 1200.
Thanks.
I'm an evolution guy, but no one is chiming in......how are you adjusting the clutch pack and cable? Yes warped plates can cause problems. Is your shifter paw adjusted correctly? Not sure if iron head has a dedent plate. That's all I have for Ya.
Do you mean 'engaging'? Or do you mean that the clutch isn't releasing when you pull on the lever? When the lever is pulled in and the bike is in gear, you should be able to push the bike, because the clutch spring pressure is taken off the plates.

When i pull the lever my clutch isnt releasing from the clutches. And i know this. It isnt releasing all the way it will when its off but when i start it and put it in gear and pull the clutch it will just catch and shut off
This may sound a very basic question, but do you have the correct factory service manual and are you setting the clutch adjustment up by the instructions? You may be close to getting it right, just not quite there.
If you go to the stickies at the top of this Sporty forum you will find one called "Poor Man's Sportster Service Maintenance Guide " and in there are links to clutch adjustment hints and tips.
I dont my grandad downloaded one online on his computer but as far as the thread on here we have already done all that and my clutch looks totally different but its the same as far as the basics..
