Default How much to deduct for damage?

Hi,

I'm looking at a very low mileage 2003 Sporty. There is a dent in the tank about the size of my fist, the front finder got whacked pretty good, but no visible contact with the front tire and frame appears to be just fine. Oh yea, there's a scrape on the rear fender, not huge or anything, but more than just a scratch. Engine, pegs, etc all look fine. I guess someone just dropped it going <5 or 10 mph and had to get rid of it.

I've seen lots of ads that always emphasize that the bike has "never been laid down", well how much do you deduct for one that has? Note, the shop that is selling it is going to fix it. I was lucky enough to see how relatively minor the damage was, or I wouldn't be interested in it. Still, it is a bike that has been laid down...so how much do you think I should deduct for it?

Thanks!

Depends (not the baby bandages), damaged goods eyemac, good thing you know it. However, sounds minorandif you push the right buttons you may be able to negotiate a custom paint job at value or, 'take it off their hands'.I'd say $1K due to damages, if it's suites you.

That's good to hear. The price that I'm looking at is at least 1000 below market. Probably more like 1500 below, and it only has 500+ miles.

Thanks for the 411 !

Eyemac, I have a tank and front fender that are both in great shape, no dents only a few scratches, primo for new paint that I would let go pretty cheap if it would help your cause. I also have some slip-ons as well. Just PM me if you are interested. Oh, the tins are Diamond Ice (silver)

I have a whole 2003 For Sale. It has no dents or scratches but it does have miles 20,000 which is what everyone seems to be concened with. Apparantly Sportsters are supposed to be full scale models of motorcycles and not actually get ridden.

Maybe they want to hold the handlebars without feeling like they got a joy-buzzer in their hands.

If the bike is completely repaired and (this is the key) repaired "properly" there is nothing to deduct because there is no damage from being down.

I would look at the fork stop and see if it is damaged sounds like a possible front end clip and tank slapper. also I wouldnt be concerned about 20,000-30,000 miles on a evo motor , they are a different beast than your grandpa's sporty. and I have rode both pre 04 and earlier I think the vibration thing is way over stated.
