Lightbulb Sportster Ammo Box Panniers

Hey guys.

Came across a very nice 48 on ebay the other day and i was awed by the single ammo box pannier on the left side. It got me curious so i did some digging around on here and elsewhere. Unfortunately I have only come across Dyna's with them (and they look absolutely freaking amazing!). However, I can't seem to find any relating to Sporty's.

Here's the link

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1511528419...84.m1423.l2649

If anyone can point me in the right direction or has any advice would be much appreciated. There are two problems I can see, in that one i have a side mounted number plate and two my turn indicators are not relocated.

Really want to do this on my bike!

Thanks Chappy99.

Not sure what I'm going to do about the turn signals though. I'm going to take a look at the side mount number plate also.

Now you need to find a place to mount your Ma Deuce.

Hi Hawk,

I ran them on my Sporty for 3+ years. Put the plate and the turn signals right on the ammo can.

Look at post #4 in this thread...it outlines how I did it.

In fact, I still have these sitting here. Shipping to the UK is probably more expensive than making them up from scratch yourself...but if you are interested in them, shoot me a PM or an email.

Kevin you sir are an absolute god send. I've been racking my brains for go knows how long and even bothered my local salesman in the new Swansea HD dealership. We came up with some ideas but nothing concrete. I'm hoping to mod the bike as little as possible (I'm not where near as confident or mechanically minded as you guys on here). I was hoping to use the smaller ammo boxes and preferably a single can on the one side that i can remove if need be. We came up with devising a bracket that could attach itself to the quick release nuts for the rear fender? and maybe upon finding the bracket for a sissy bar i can somehow weld onto the ammo box. Any thoughts on this guys?

Thanks again for the help

Yes, if you get a plate and attach it to the two mounting points on the fender struts, then drill 3-4 holes in the plate and mount the ammo can to those 3-4 holes, you're golden.

Absolutely no mods need to be done to the bike, other than wiring. Wiring only needs to be done if you choose to put any lights on the Ammo can.

I used 3/16" thick aluminum plate and it was plenty strong enough...and easy to work with.

As far as placement of the Ammo Can (height wise) you want it to be high enough so that when the shocks compress fully the axle and lower shock bolts does not hit the bottom of the pan...or do like I did and put spacers between the can and the plate to give it clearance.

DK the only problem is the difference in rear fenders. As I have the Iron I'm limited on space due to the rear lights. and unfortunately the side mounted number plate. Although I should probably aim for the right hand side myself. I was hoping for left side but i think that maybe pushing it. Thank you for the suggestion of what size plate would be suitable that makes things much easier, especially as the ammo cans I'm thinking of using are the smaller ones than was placed on your sporty. I've placed some pics to get an idea of the space involved. Thank you once again DK I honestly thought this thread had died a death.

Yeah, I think the right side is the way to go, for me that is easier anyway...getting into the can on the high side.

Don't know how you can keep the turn signals you have and have the can on one side.

Might be less expensive, and easier to get some new signals and relo them both.

Here's a LINK to one option.

This is just one example of many place you can relo the turn signals to.
