Default Key information

I am trying to complete the information page in my owners manual, and it ask for the Ignition Key Number. Where can I find this. My key only has a 3 on it, surely this is not the complete key number.

The dealer should give it to you from your VIN #. When I had the extra keys cut for mine I gave my VIN, brought id showing I was owner and pd $25 and got 2 keys a few weeks later. The new keys have a key number stamped in them. There isn't anything that you would need that number for so I wouldn't worry about it. All can be found from VIN #.

Thanks, The security fob has a 24 digit number inside, but the key only has a three on it. I keep the VIN # with me, but did not know if there was a hidden "key number" somewhere on the key.

Ride !!

My 2009 came with a barcode that you're supposed to stick in your operators manual. I stuck mine on the back of the alarm bypass card and keep it in my wallet. Slyedog is correct that one can also be obtained from your vin.

Not exactly on topic but a recent key problem ...

Key broke off in the ignition switch but I was able to fish out the shank. After a few moments of desperation, I realized that the situation was fixable. Cleaned the broken edges of the key, added some solder flux and "tinned" the two halves with tin-lead solder.

Placed the pieces on a flat piece of wood, heated both with a soldering iron and gently pushed them together. Obviously the soft-soldered repair wouldn't survive normal service and I'd be back to the broken key situation again so ...

After the parts cooled, I filed off excess solder, took the "new" key to the hardware store and asked for a copy. Unhappily when I tried the new key, it wouldn't fit in the ignition switch - too thick. Filed the key down a bit at the time until it fit. (I actually had two copies made and modified both - the spare is in a secure place.)

Cheers -

Go to a key shop(not Handy Dans Hardware) get a couple of keys for probally 5 bucks. A good key shop will do the barrel keys like a lot of Harleys use also. A whole lot cheaper than the dealer.

I think the last time I checked you could get two Harley key blanks on Ebay for like $2 or $3, and then have a keysmith cut the new blanks for under $5 for the two blanks.

Edit: Just checked. The two key blanks are up to $5 now.
