I have a 2008 Nightster that won't start. Lights turn on but It doesn't do that high pitch sound when you put your swith in run. I've checked all the cables and everything is good.
That sound is/was your fuel pump powering up. Check the relay that runs the fuel pump. I think you can swap it with another relay and be able to ride to the shop for a replacement. Or check it with the other relay to see if that's the issue. Someone can tell you which one it is, my bike is a carb model so no help for you there.
As John said, it's likely your fuel pump relay. Next to the fuses are 2 relays, System and Fuel Pump. Pull them out and swap them. If you can then hear the fuel pump you've found the problem.
The relays are a common automotive part you can get at almost any auto parts store. These are some of the common p/n's that an auto parts store can cross reference:
OEM is an Omron 2165A21A
NAPA is AR614
ABC Auto parts is STD RY302. It is listed as a '03 GMC Envoy part.
Ok, i checked fuses and switched the relays around since they are the same...nothing. I'm talking about a bike that cranked and was running for 30 seconds. I shut it off cause I was waiting on some friends. When I turned the key, the fuel pump whine didn't come on. I brought it back to my apt today and checked all the cables. Nothing is wrong. Is there a way to test the fuel pump?
Does it still try to turn over? Buy a relay and swap it out with one of the old ones and try, than swap with the other and try it again. They both have to be working relays, one controls your fuel pump, and the other controls the starting system and ect.
Have you done any messing with any of the wires at all? Have you recently messed with the controls on your handle bar?
Dude, before you panic, check to make sure your bike is not in gear with the kickstand down when you hit the starter.... it won't start if it is.... just saying',,,,
