Default HELP!!! Indicators Issue!

Hi everyone,

First post on here, haven't even got mt intorduction down but I'm in desperate need!

I have a 2013 Forty Eight which I utterly adore. I had a small accident with her last year due to a careless (insert expletive) van driver. Since then I've been having an issue with my indicators.

Half of the time they are just fine but following the accident and out of the blue one day, I put the left side indicator on and it stayed on. No flashing and it wouldn't cancel. After about 5 minutes, it went off and returned to usual working ways.

At the same time as the amber lights and green dash arrow staying on, the red key symbol also lit up on the dash.

Yesterday however while out for only the 3rd time this year, the indicators ceased working all together. No amber signal and no flashing green arrow on the display either.

It's obviously an electrical issue but I don't know enough about where to look/ what to do to sort it. Ive done plenty of work on my previous Road King with no issues at all but that was a 2001 bike and it appears from the small amount of tinkering I have done, that things have moved on a little since then!

The only electrical work I've carried out on it was to attach a trickle charge attachment to the battery but that was all.

I'm reluctant to take it to my nearest dealer as they tried to charge me Ł3,000 to repair the bike after the accident and it eventually only cost Ł300 so trust isn't terribly strong with them!

Can anyone help me or direct me to a previous thread that might be able to??

Thanks in advance!

Is your bike still under warranty? Not sure how an accident causes an electrical gremlin, so why not use your warranty coverage and have HD take a look. Considering the complexity on the new electrics, why not see if it's covered?

A 10x overestimate of damages, that's pretty scary. Find another dealer, or maybe an indy in your area is authorized to do service by HD. My local indy is like that.

Check your bulbs to make sure they are pushed in all the way, had a loose one and my turn signal lights on the dummy lights were blinking crazy fast. Pushed them back in and everything went back to normal. Worth a check other wise hopefully its under warranty and they can get it fixed for free.

It could be a wire earthing out in the switch, especially as it's intermittent. In my experience the bars take more than their share of damage in an accident and it's not always obvious. It might be worth checking for damage to the wiring around the the switch housing. Harley vibrations are legendary. could cause occasional shorts if the wiring outer is damaged. I'm with you on dealer quotes, way too high!

As suggested, check bulbs, you can swap the left ones to the right, to see if the problem moves with them. Damaged wiring or earth is my guess, but you will need to take time out to carefully inspect the wiring to track that down. If you can stop the bike while the fault is showing that will give you the best chance, especially if you know how to use a multimeter!

First things first: check the fuse that's associated with your indicators.

If its not that, then I'd say it's your left indicator switch or wiring to it; definately indicated [bad pun I know] by your explanation of events. And the red "key" symbol [something has generated an DTC [Diagnostic Trouble Code]] on your display is further indication that there's something awry. Investigate the code[s]. Then check out the switch closely and trace its wiring from the switch to the wiring harness and see if you can find anything that's not right...if you do, repair it if possible.

=8^)
