fuel overflow valve????

sooo my bike hasnt been able to start for about two months. so I cleaned the carb and put it back on. its a 1989 sporty 883. if i DO happen to get it started i cant seem to get out of first gear because it will just die. i just found out i lost my fuel overflow hose so i bought a new one but i cant figure out where the other end goes. this is my first bike and im a total noob but i really want to get my bike running again

The overflow hose runs along the base of the cylinders, down between case and oil filter and dumps on the ground, only if float sticks.

I doubt the overflow hose is the problem. Did you install your needle jet correctly?
