Here's the deal and what I'm thinking. I'm on a 91 Sportster and knowing my motors getting miles on it. Anyway at 100000 I want to rebuild or replace the motor. What I'm thinking of is a dropped bike with a motor I can pull when the time is here. I know the dangers of a wrecked vehicle of any kind. So I don't need to be told don't I won't listen What I'm asking is will a newer rubber mount motor set in my rigid mounted motor frame and be compatable with my older carberated fuel system. I'm looking for a plug and play type thing. If I have to do alot of modification to make it work it will be cheaper to rebuild what I have. And I like the idea of having the new motor setting in wait and then having another to rebuild for the next. So if there is anyone knows rather or not the newer motor will fit or have done the same thing let me know.
I would be interested in the same question. On the surface i believe you should have minimal troubles with any motor pre EFI (2006). That being said you could have a few frame tweeks that have happened between 91 and 2006 that could cause an issue. 100k on the bike that is great to here it is a testament to harleys longevity. ive been looking at a few salvage bikes also mainly interested ion the motors vs the frames although i have a plan for the frames.
Will not work without frame modifications.....Which you'd basically be cutting your frame up to make an '04 & up frame. The frame has undergone two changes from your '91...I believe a frame change in '96 and then again for the '04 model years. Just rebuild your engine if needed, which I doubt it will truely really need it.
Oh, and '04 to '06 was rubber mounted but carb'd engines, and '07 up being rubber mounted EFI's. It doesn't take long or all that much money to rebuild the engine. If your mechanically sound, you could have it done over the weekend if you pre-order all the necessary parts, so It's not like you'd be down all that long.
