Question Possible clutch issue?

Hi, im new to this thread, I recently changed my primary fluid and a few weeks later started having problems. I went to another dealer and they told me i was sold the wrong oil. I replaced the oil and cleaned the primary case, as well as a clutch adjustment. This worked for about a week, now i shift fine, however when i goose the throttle it just rev's up and slowly moves. Any ideas?

yup i did the same thing you mis adjusted your clutch arm. It takes 5 min to fix if this is the issue. take your inspection cap off and pull the retainer nut that hold in the clutch arm. loosen the setting screw a few turns. now screw it setting screw in until it barely touchs the clutch than back it out 1/4 to 1/3 of a turn. than put everything back. the only other possibility is that your over adjusted the outside adjusted and put preasure on it which is allowing it to slip. I can only assume what you have as you never told anyone year and make of your bike.

First, you should tell us the Year of the bike and the Mileage. New vs a 20yo bike with 60,000 miles makes a difference.

Next, what was the "wrong oil" you used.

Last, are you experienced working on Harleys (doing the clutch adj.) or is this all new to you?

6900 miles 09 xlc, the wrong oil was big twin oil, and this was my first time doing the adjustment, I followed the sm and had tips from friends that have done it.

OK, but "big twin oil" doesn't really tell me anything. Assuming you did do the clutch adjustment correctly, it sounds like you may have used an oil containing friction modifiers. I love oil with friction modifiers in the motor because it's super slippery, but if you put it in the primary/tranny, you can wind up with clutch plates that slip instead of grab.

If that's what you did and it is causing the problem, the only fix is to replace the clutch plates.
