Default 2014 48 Aftermarket Exhaust

Hi all,

I am trying to plan out my stage 1 upgrades for over the winter now so I can budget accordingly. I have several questions as it relates to putting a new exhaust system on my 2014 48:

1. Is there something different about the 2014 48 vs. previous model versions, when it comes to fitting a new exhaust? I've bounced around various mfg. and retailer websites and for one reason or another (and I don't know the reasoning), there seems to be a lot more options "available" to 2013 and older models than 2014 models. Would an exhaust that is fully compatible with a 2012 or 2013 model 48 be compatible with the 2014, or is there truly something different about the 2014 that makes previous exhaust renditions not compatible?

2. I will eventually get a 2 up seat so my lady can ride with me from time to time. I plan to leave a solo seat on the bike the majority of the time, but I'd like the option at least. Are there certain styles of exhaust I should look at or avoid based on that (short shots may burn the hell out of her legs, for instance, or long straight shots may interfere with a passenger peg (etc.).

3. I want to black my whole bike out eventually, and I'd like my pipes to be very loud, almost annoyingly loud (more for safety/being heard than anything else). With all that in mind (2 up, black, loud), does anyone have any recommendations?

Appreciate all the feedback in advance, guys.

The master cylinder was relocated along with new o2 sensors.

I just put on a set of Vance & Hines 3 inch Twin Slash slip ons.

As with most V&H products they sound good, but are loud.

Thanks for the tips. Do slip-ons increase both sound and performance? One more so than the other?

Guzzi,

Those are pretty sharp looking. Did you get one of the optional baffles (quiet/performance) or just go standard? Is the bike a lot louder/throatier than it used to be? I'm not looking to be the biggest d-bag in the neighborhood but I'm definitely looking for louder/throatier as I live in a highly congested area (Chicago area has a huge and densely populated urban sprawl like few other cities in the world) and want other drivers to hear when I am around. How did the slip-ons affect your performance? In what rev range can you tell a difference, if anywhere?

If I go the slip-on route, and don't do a new cleaner until a later date, should I still be getting the bike retuned?

Lastly, what does the header pipe look like under the heat shields on a 48? Are they plain steel finish?

Answers lead to many more questions I'm afraid. Thanks/sorry guys!

Any other feedback off the original post is also appreciated!

I'm in Chicago also. Believe me when I tell you, loud pipes will not do **** for your safety. When not riding a mc I ride a 47' fire truck. It has flashing lights and a siren that's wayyyyyy louder than any pipe choice you may make. People still don't see us. I would choose medium loud pipes. Something that gives the bike a good sound, but is not obnoxious. I have short shots and feel like a jerk every time is leave the house at 5:30 in the morning.

I don't know what I don't know, as a new rider. I'm not looking to compete with a fire truck, or loop traffic at rush hour with all the noises around bouncing off the buildings. I'm looking to be loud enough that the guy next to me on the Manheim or Rt. 59 can hear that I'm still next to him because I haven't had the option of doing anything but riding side by side with him for the last 2 miles based on the traffic around me. Or that people at waiting for an opening at an intersection I am coming up on can hear me coming even if that can't see me. I get that I am responsible for my own safety in these and all instances, but I can't help but feel loud pipes would make me more noticeable in circumstances like those.

Truth, but sometimes it seems like the bike is moving faster than sound. Im guilty, sotimes i just barely see a motorcycle before they zoom by and hear the trail of the exhaust not far behind. Harleys are a bit different though from sport bikes but the same concept applies, i have been able to know something was coming based on sound alone and when i hear a nice loud exhaust on a cruiser you know exactly what it is. Loud pipes saves lives, the is a gamble.

Only time a loud exhaust has helped me notice a motorcycle is when they were in my blind spot.

I have a 2014 48 and I got the v&H short shots in black. I'm happy with them but still think if I should have gone with the 2 into 1 pipes. I also ride 2 up occasionally so I decided to go with the HD ppad and burley tall sissy bar. Great setup for my lady she loves the setup. I believe the only difference in the 2014 is the brackets. I would just double check with the seller and see if the pipes you want will fit a 2014 model.
