Default Winter makeover ??

I have had my bike for almost two years now and I think next winter I'm going to have some ghost painting done on the bike so it is going to be down for a week or two, so I have decided to change the cams while the bike is down but I have no idea who makes the best and/or what type I should get and if there is anything else I may want to do while I have the heads open, any suggestions would be greatly appreciated?

Cams and matching headwork really go hand-in-hand. Performance cams with stock heads, isn't going to produce much in the way of bang for the buck.

CR needs to be right too, the three go hand-in-hand. 883 owners are using Hammer or some other brand 1250 kits, to boost performance. Very worthwhile taking a look at their website and phoning them for their recommendations.

Hammer Performance 570 cams.. Otherwise go all in with a 1250, heads and 560s or 600s..

I really don't understand why someone would suggest a 1250 build when I already have a 1200 if I were going to build the motor and I'm starting with a 1200 I think I would prefer to go with a Big Bore kit that would pump the cubic inch up a lot higher than 76ci = 1250, there are some out there that achieve mid 80's?

But anyways, I'm not going to build the motor at this point I was thinking more of a Stage 2, what is in a full Stage 2 besides cams?

We haven't! We have pointed out to you that the 1250 kit makers are all Sportster experts, offer a wide range of services and can advise on all aspects of tuning them, including head porting, cam kits, big bore kits, whatever you fancy. They can help you tune your bike!

If you are looking for an easier cam mod that is a bolt in go with an Andrews N2 cam. They will give you some additional preformance increase but knowthing that requires head work. once you go to an Andrews N4 or higher head work is much more important to get the most out of the cams. i'm putting in N2's in mine this winter. I would still call them to get the skinny and piece of mind. you will definatly need to tune the bike after the cams unless you have an auto tuner.

I gave two suggestions. One was of a cam that was designed to work with a stock/stage 1 1200 and the other if you want to wake up your ride and get max performance without going through case boring, disassembly, etc..

If you're changing cams, its best to match it with headwork, then you got to change your pistons to match everything. Pistons roughly cost half what a 1250 kit costs $350 vs. $700. So whats another 350 bucks for brand new jugs which are made of a better quality material than OEM jugs?

Going with a BigBore (88"-90") is a whole other story. Case boring and what not. That will cost big bucks. With these builds, costs rise dramatically.

Stage 1, etc. and the rest of these terms aren't really fixed between different performance shops. Maybe the only agreed on term is stage 1, since it consists of changing your exhaust, filter and re-tuning your bike. Stage 2 to some means changing your cams after you have already made the "stage 1" upgrade. With headwork you can get different names for different levels of headwork. You can get stage 1 headwork, but that doesn't mean its only stage 1. It could be called stage 3 since it follows exhaust, filter, tuning and cams. LOL.

Anyway, forget the terms. Just look at the cam I suggested and check out the XL Forum if you want to know more about performance.
