Stupid Question - Can air cooled engines overheat?

Riding into the rain isn't a problem because the engine is running and continuing to produce heat. The reason you don't want to spray your hot motor with a garden hose after shutdown is that you're quenching the metal causing it to rapidly contract while the internal parts are not contracting as quickly. It can have a negative effect on gaskets as well.
All that said, the tolerances in most harley engines are loose enough that it probably wouldn't cause any problems if you did hose it down.
