I've done the searches for info on converting an 883 into a 1200, and they seem a little dated and light in content. So, with that in mind, I am hopeful that those who have done such a thing, and/or who have done the research will chime in and really nail down this important aspect of Sportster ownership.
As a little background, the bike involved is a 1999 883, which has a Voyager trike conversion on it. With my wife on board, it won't pull 75 mph on the interstate, so we need to either upgrade it to the 1200 or trade it off. Have decided to upgrade, so am sincerely asking for all the advice on parts, mods, options and tips etc. I have a helicoptor mechanic/harley dude willing to help do the work, so between the two of, we should be able to get it done, whatever it entails.
you can get the screamin eagle kit, which comes with jugs, pistons {forged], rings and pins. its a great kit for 400-475 dollar range. gratification is instant!! also you might want to think about changing the front drive belt pully yours has a 27 tooth and i uped mine to a 30 thooth, awsome for crusing the interstate at 75+ with reduced vibration! good luck let us know when you finish it!!
With the screaming eagle kit, is there any needing to send in your cylinders for boring, or is the kit complete? Thanks. Also, where does one get the sprocket you mention?
I am being told by a friend who is also a Helicopter mechanic, that it is no big deal to simply buy the pistons and then have the cylinders bored out. Any thoughts on this way to go? thanks.
the 1200 pistons are about .250 bigger than to 883 thats a lot of passes with a boring bar. the person that did mine, said the screamin eagle kit would be just as cheap as the labor for boring out 2 cylinders.
i just got a kit from v twin, i think i paid 460.00 with shipping, came with everything but push rod seals. we are going to knock it out next weekend, i hope. i looked into the boreing things out and your right on, it is just as cheep to get the kit, plus the pistons match the jugs, no guessing. ill let you all know what happens. o and i might get a spel checker too
