Default Your Pool Water Level

*Palm Beach, Broward, and Munroe County guys who have pools.......how often are you adding water to your pool?

I normally add 25 minutes of running hose water at full open maybe every other month.

In the last year or two, it has been every other week.

Not it is like once or twice a week.

'hoping it is not a leak.

Anyone else find the above or anything similar to your pool?

*I am asking abt these counties since they will be of "like kind" WX to me. You more northern chaps may have a little "cooler" (cooler - hah) WX and diff humidity to me.

Here in Tampa area, the only time I had to add water was when the pool light had a leak. Other than that, I have to drain it every so often due to the heavy summer rains. If you getting the rain and adding water, you have a leak. Typically pool light or skimmer box. Guy charged $250 to come find and fix the leak. Money well spent. Used a microphone to listen for the leak.

I'm thinking the lack of rain Buzz.I have a lake in my back yard and we use water from it for the sprinkler system .I can see lake is down about 5-6 ft and I've lost the prime on my system as it is to low now. So I would bet its evaporation, unless your getting rain. Then as your suspecting it may be a leak ! Im in Brwrd/PB cnty line and I havent had any rain other than a 5 min sprinkle in the last 2-3 weeks. Things over in this area are very crunchy !! Hoping its just evaporation !

I no longer live in FL, but here in Vegas I lose about an inch a week or so...so about 250 gallons, to evaporation. If I put a solar cover on, that almost stops, but then the pool gets really warm. We've seen it over 100*.

Left the hose on and overfilled it twice and that was enough. Bought one of these auto fill units so I didn't have to manually fill the pool on a weekly or more often basis.

If you are adding water once or twice a week then you have a leak.
If leak is not at pump/filter area then leak is likely at pool light, skimmer or drain.

It has been extremely hot and dry here in NC (I know you said FL). 95 - 100+heat index for 3 weeks with no rain at my property.

I had to drop the hose in to add about 800-1000 gallons last week to keep the skimmer close to the proper level.
Luckily a few days later it rained and filled it the rest of the way.

Get a bucket and fill it with water, and sit it near your pool. Then after a few days compare how much has evaporated as compared to the pool. Then do some magic magic math to account for the extra heating of the water in the bucket, and the surface area differences, and determine after the magic math how the evaporation rate of the pool compares to the bucket.

Minimal rain. Sporadic lately.

Yuppers, those 2 areas are common leakers for sure. TY......

Had a cover YEARS ago. Prefer not to do that again.

LOL, been thinking abt an auto fill. Looked at your link, ty. To mw, Iwill putup with tossing the hose in for now. Don't need 1 more thing to go wrong.

Besides, hopefully the ave temps (lower) will come back. Yeah right........

Hmmm. I was eyeing a few nearby cracks today. Will take a closer look tomorrow. Don't think those 2 cracks were IN the pool. Just a corner settling. You know how those goes. Oy....

The most impressive system of natural water level balancing is Crater Lake. It has no water entry except from precipitation. And has no water exit except from evaporation and seepage. Through this closed system as measured over 100 years, the lake level has never varied more than 16’ and at an average depth of 1,500’ equates to less than 1% variation. . Because of this closed ecosystem, with 0 land runoff except from the crater walls, it has some of the purest naturally occurring water in the world. This accounts for its appearance of the water being a dark blue. It is a treasure of natural beauty.

So, BC my friend, you have an imbalance between surface area and natural water accumulation. I’d suggest reducing the diameter of your pool until the exposed surface area reduces the evaporation until it equals the amount of water received from Mother Nature. There are probably some very fancy and complicated formulaes to figure this out. But, I haven’t done those type of calculations since undergraduate school using a slide rule. And I can’t find my slide rule, so I’d suggest doing it experimentally. Or just throw one of those plastic bubble wrap covers over the pool. And if the water loss is significantly reduced, I’d conclude your water loss is due to evaporation rather than from a gopher that chewed a hole in your pool plumbing.

Edit: here’s a good reference to calculate water evaporation rate as function of surface area, temperature, humidity, wind velocity, and a bunch of other stuff.

Ok, ok, it appears I need to update you on a few things MG. Tho this will briefly derail the thread. But 1st, you still owe me a dinner/BBQ. $5.00. And like 1000 beers.

Ok, 1) I wrote that formula in your link above. (You're welcome.) 2) Why didn't you post the other solution you had for me? You e-mailed me another solution but failed to put it here in this thread? Are you a little embarrassed? Well "fair is fair" so I will copy/paste your other idea below so maybe others can weigh in on your idea. Here it is for others to see in italics.

Hi Buzz,

I know I owe you a BBQ and a couple of beers, ok about 1K but I am still working on collecting cans to send you the $5.00 I owe you. Plus since stamps for mailing an envelope went up a few cents, I may be delayed another few months collecting cans. I know a few months is a long time but as you know, they don't take me outta the straight jacket too often.

Here is how you can keep the water loss down. It is simple. Just get a few 5 mile long 2X4's at Home Depot. Or the grocery store. Lift your pool up on each corner 1 mile. Put the 2X4's under each corner. Now, when it rains even near you, you can push on the 2X4's and collect the rainfall that is even remotely close to your house.

I like cookies. Do you like cookies?

For the pool tubing for the water inlets, I got that covered too. You do not need those stupid PVC pipes. They are too heavy. Just go back to Home Depot and get 5 mile long straws. Or at an ice cream stand. That way, they can carry the water to and fro your pool a mile high since straws are lighter than PVC pipes. Did you know that PVC stands for Palinko Vagina Cookies? Do you like thimbles? I like thimbles.

Please ask my wife to visit me. She knows my address here at Bellview.

Is today February? They have pudding cups in the cafeteria in March. Green. Huh, there is a sock on my left foot. I am fine thank you. Cookies.

I will whyte two you again soon,,,
The Muno Geezer

Yes, MonoGeezer, thank you. I will head out right away and make those purchases. Great idea as always.

Thank you,

BC7
