I tend to drop my clutch hand as other riders approach.
Most often to other touring bikes.
If the "wave" isn't acknowledged, I just gather the rider was either to involved with his ride or just not the friendly type.
It takes all kinds.
I have been known to miss a wave or two when riding..
I'm all waved out, dang it I've got to sell my Jeep and buy something where I don't have to wave all of the time. I had thought about a vette but I guess that is out now.
I always give a quick wave if I don't have to watch out for cagers. I found the only ones that dont usually wave back are the wanna be 1%ers and the crotch rocket kids...in which case I was only waving at the bike anyway
I agree with skulmn. Even if someone else doesn't wave back it doesn't mean much. Sometimes you don't see it, or thinking about something else, or its not a good time. Wave anyway. Sure there's more now than when I started, but that's a good thing. Remind others of the brotherhood.
I've got a Harley license tag on the front of my truck and I have Harley riders even acknowledge me in that. I think the older crowd still see the commonality of our interest in riding, so we feel less pressure about being "cool" and wave to other riders, it's just a camaraderie thing to many people.

I wave. Harleys, Metrics, Mopeds, Dirt Bikes, Bicycles, Tricycles, kids on skateboards & scooters, etc. I dont care a bit if they dont wave back.
My favorite wave is the one I get when Im alone and I pass another lone bike on a God awful weather day. You know, one of those Cat 3, sideways rain, involuntary lane change days. Thats when you give the Wave and get a Wave back as if to say, Hey brother, were out here in the sh**t together. so hang on and stay safe! I live just a little North of Seattle so if you love doing something, you better love doing it in the rain.
I also like it when I get a chance to wave to little kids when their in a car next to me at a stoplight. I see the big smiles and excitement on their faces when they realize their getting waved to by the big old guy on the big ole Harley. I think most of the parents actually think its cool too. I figure that as bikers were all ambassadors for each other and anytime we can let someone else know that we are here, and that we are OK, its a good thing.
