Personally, I try to pay attention to where I'm going rather than worrying about waving. It's a PITA. I used to drive Corvettes and that was a PITA too!!
could it be possible that those who dont wave are paying attention to riding and their group and not looking @ you?
I second the fact they may not have been looking. When we travel in groups, we discourage the "wave" as its possible it might be confused for a bike ahead of you pointing out a road hazard.
I find that it depends on where you are and how many bikes their are. Take The Black Hills Rally for example. Not too many riders waving there because there are just too many bikes. In the South I find that most people still wave. In some areas when your riding on curvy mountain roads it's just too dangerous to take your attention off of the road ahead.
I ran into some crotch rocket touring bikers from Canada this past summer on the west coast at a gas stop. They had been on the road for over a week. We also met up again at the motel later that night. Most of the riders are just out having a good time no matter what they ride.
Along the Alkan it was not uncommon for bikes to stop and talk with you about the trip.
I generally do wave unless I am in California. They just don't seem to wave there and after a while you tend to learn to give it up.

For those that don't like waving, be glad you don't live and ride around here. Just about everybody on a bike waves, cops on bikes wave, cops in cars wave, people in cages wave - hell, pedestrians even wave sometimes. I just ride around one-handed waving like mad at everybody so as not to offend.
With the popularity of riding, it is becoming a little much to wave to every person riding.
+1 I ride around Lake Murray in Columbia SC some in the summer while visiting my brother. It's 60 to 70 miles around, if you waved at every bike you see you would never get your hand back on the grip.
I too have kinda stopped waving unless I am alone then I tend to wave to everyone including crotck rockets cause they are not the enemy cars are. when I ride with others it depends on how many riders I'm with and how far back I am in the pack.

Back in the day there weren't many bikes on the road and when we met we
would hold our fist up in the air with our arm bent at 90 degrees. This spring
5 of us were riding rt 52 up to Welsh Wv where we hit rt 16 and went over
the mountain back to 460. Anyway we came around a curve in to a small straight away, this kid maybe 30 years old, black leather vest, dew rag smiling ear to ear with maybe 3 teeth his fist high in the air waving. The funny part was he was hanging out the window of an old beat up pickup truck. I was still laughing 30 min later.
The only guys on bikes around here that never wave are the Illinois State Troopers. I wave at them and they grimace at me and turn their heads to stare at me as we meet.
