Hello everyone
I just bought a 2001 sportster 1200 xl custom and its not idling right. When I have the choke out its fine idles perfectly but with the choke in it stalls out unless I give it just a tiny little bit of throttle. Its got a aftermarket air breather and im wondering if the bikes not getting enough air. If anyone can help id appreciate it
Thanks for the tips.
Its got a carburetor. I guess ill have to get a manual so I know what im doing. Not really sure how I would go about it Im not that mechanical inclined to rebuild a carb.

Yeah it runs great. Except when idling. im going to do a oil change and change the plugs because I dont know when the last time anything was done to it. I picked it up off my landlord. he got it from a guy who owed him money ive got to get a speedometer for it so I can get it inspectedbecause I guess the original owner thought it was cooler not to have one.
If you can hold a steady speed low rpms or high with out it hesitating or missing and accelerate and decelerate without problems I would turn the idle screw in some to make it idle higher to see if that helps. Put some Seafoam in the fuel to help clean things out. If it still does it I would think to check the idle/slow jets etc. for dirt/plug.
If the bike has free flowing pipes and a free flowing air cleaner, the carb should have been re-jetted. The fact that it idles better with the choke pulled indicates that you're running too lean. ( Even stock bikes are set a bit too lean from the factory.)
It's about a 1/2 hour job to re-jet it.
