I have had that a couple of times on the highway--people just merging into my lane without looking or looking and doing it anyways. I haven't yet had something I would call nearly wiped out tough. There has always been time to do something. Then again, I have a lot of miles road cycling and touring and am conditioned to motorists almost running me down, so it really isn't anything new to me, even though I have only been riding a motorcycle for a year. People are just going to do this stuff, regardless of how much you pay attention. There is nothing you can do to stop it. All you can do is think about what you are doing when it happens or what you could do to prevent or lessen the chances of these close calls. Like others have stated, assume everyone will kill you--because they will if you give them the chance.
