Our alternator uses magnets to create its field, it is not battery dependent.
If the battery is short circuited nothing will work.
A "dead" battery is rarely at full discharge or at 0_Volts, so after a few seconds of effort the alternator alone will allow the engine to start.
Our batteries are called starting batteries BTW.
