Default Fuel Moto 98: Wow!

As mentioned in an earlier thread, I finally got around to pulling the cam chest apart for the second time to address the spring loaded tensioners. First time was a few years ago at around 32,000. Now have 63,000 and the motor was making noises that just didn't sound healthy. At the first replacement I ended up with the SE billet cam plate (earlier version still with spring loaded tensioners) and tried gear drive Head Quarters HQ0034 cams. Things just never seemed to work out with the gear drive as I couldn't quiet down the top end. Ended up putting the stock cams back in with the spring loaded tensioners. Things worked, but, was never quiet. Well, look how things ended up (see attached).

Decided to go FM based on all the 107 reviews. Pulled everything apart and got it back together. Fired right up. With the addition of the Jackpot slip ons things sounded awesome. Hat's off to FM. Only problem was I had was wicked (I'm from the Boston area ) stumble starting at around 2,000 RPM. Couldn't roll on the throttle without it bucking and skipping. I called FM and got another MAP with more fuel in the lower cells for the PC3 I am running, but, still didn't help. I was afraid that I might have mis-aligned the cam/crank sprockets so I pulled the cam cover and everything was ok. Double checked everything else on re-assembly, but, still stumbled. Went with my gut and started adding fuel in the RPM ranges that I was having issues with. WOW!!! It runs and pulls!!! Still having some issues with pinging in some lower throttle ranges, but, getting better. Hoping FM has a MAP that will get me closer and more accurratley than my ear tuning, but, WOW!! What a massive change. I will more than likely have to get an actual dyno tune to get things spot on, but, I can't wait to get some miles on this motor. Fuel Moto ROCKS!!! Motor is quieter than ever with the hydraulic upgrade and the cams are whisper quiet. Motor has never been this quiet. Pipes sound awesome.

Anyone thinking of using anything Fuel Moto I say go for it!! If anyone has a FM 98 upgrade that had a stock ECM, stock headpipes and Jackpot 4" slip ons can you e-mail me your MAP if you are wunning PC3? I would like to see what you have for numbers in various cells. Thanks

Neil

I know you probably didn't touch the intake but if you are having to add a bunch of fuel at a certain rpm that is not linear with the rest of the map, might want to check for an intake leak.

I actually did both before I tore into the second time to double check the cam/crank timing. I sprayed some brake cleaner all around the intake flanges and there was no change. After I tore into things the second time I double checked the intake flanges along with all the throttle body connections. I found what I thought was a loose intake bolt, but, after getting things assembled again there was no change in running from before. I even tried the propane tourch to check for leaks. That's when I really started to beleive things were running lean. It reminded me of a carb that needed a jetting change based on the RPM and amount of throttle where things stummbled. When I added fuel I was able to begin to ride. I added more and I was finally able to get the bike down the road and then just heard pinging. That indicated to me that the major lean was taken care of (bucking, stumble etc...) and then just ping at certian areas. Told me that I was getting close. By this point the bike was getting real warm as I was just riding into the driveway, hooking up laptop, adding some fuel to certian cells and riding off again without shutting bike down. When I did cool it a bit more, some of the pinging went away. Makes me think I was in the right ballpark. I now just have some very slight, and I mean slight, skip at certian areas of throttle position. I think if I can just get a bit more fuel, or a more accurate MAP, I will have no issues and can put off an actual dyno tune for a bit. Almost wish I had an auto tune feature because I think I am close enough to get an auto tune to finish things off.
Thanks for the suggestion, it may still turn out to be the case. That is why I like to post on this forum, to pull from the experience of other members.

Thanks,

Neil

Autotune might be cheaper than dyno!
