I am starting to do my own oil changes. I want to increase the frequency , and most of all, tired of being ripped off. I have read alot of discussion on Amsoil on this board. My question is this, the Amsoil site says you can dump the same oil, 20-50, in all three holes. How many of you are doing this? What are the pros and cons? Would this hold true for Mobil 1 V Twin also?
The MOCO says you can run synthetic in all 3 holes but most folks I know don't, including me. I have a hard time putting engine oil in a tranny. I run Mobil1 v-twin in the engine, Mobil1 Synthetic 75W90 Gear Oil in the tranny, and whatever 30-40 weight motor oil I have on hand in the primary...
I run the Amsoil in all 3. If it meets the spec use it. I have many years experience working as a manufacturers warranty auditor and have never seen a failure due to wrong type of oil. Just make sure it meets spec and use brand of your choice.
This subject is well documented in teh Tech forum under oil and oil related topics.
To sum it up, the Gear oil is going to withstand the gear intensive environment of the tranny better than a regular engine oil. It will not harm your warranty.
Your ride, your choice. I'm a Mobil 1 guy, gear oil in the tranny, regular stuff in the engine, and I use HD Primary in the primary chain case.
I run Syn 3 in all three. Ran it in my softail the same way and sold it with 63000 miles on it and no problems, no leaks and no noise issues at all. I live by the rule that what is easier works for me. You can run the Mobil 1 V-Twin synthetic 20w-50 in all three also. No harm done.
Amsoil MCV 20w50 or Mobil 1 20w-50 motorcycle oil can be use in all three holes.
However, the new Amsoil MCV 20w-50 motorcycle oil was formulated with Harley in mind. It has a higher (thicker) viscosity than any of the 75w-90 gear lubes at 212 degrees F, (including synthetic gear lubes and Mobil 1 20w-50 motorcycle oil) it is less shear thinning than any 75w-90 gear lubes or HD primary gear lube. Also has a API GL1 gear lube rating.
