amber brake lights
As you like to argue, you might enjoy Maryland Code § 22-206(a)(1) with regards to the requirement to have at least two stop lights. How many motorcycles in Maryland are thusly equipped? I see no exception for motorcycles in the law.
Notice Maryland Code § 22-104, which specifically prohibits a person, which includes a consumer, from removing or altering safety equipment. It's more than merely risking "getting a ticket", you get a ticket for a crime. You are not allowed to continue to perpetrate the crime, you have to return the vehicle back to its legal requirements, and demonstrate that you've done so. Refuse, and you'll lose the ability to legally drive that vehicle on the road.
You also might want to observe COMAR 11.14.03. These are the Maryland motorcycle inspection requirements in order to obtain a licence plate in maryland. Notice in particular 08.A(1), which specifies that a motorcycle built after January 1, 1973 shall have turn signals. That's why you won't get through an inspection without them, and don't see motorcycles sold or ridden without them in Maryland.
Are all these laws and regulations enforced rigorously and at all times by all police officers? Of course not. As every Harley owner with loud pipes and rocket rider with tiny turn signals knows.
In my original post I said I see the OP's plan of using amber auxiliary brake lights as being technically illegal, and not a problem. I stand by my words. The OP even went to some local police to check, and they said they see no problem either, since his center or main brake light is red. While the police and I may disagree on the nuances of the legality, we all agreed it's a non-issue.
